Durham Regional

Durham, I’m here for you blogging the local hospitals this week. Today we’re doing a compare and contrast with Duke by visiting the other one in town, Durham Regional Hospital. Oh, long story.

It’s quieter here, though when I said that the nurse said, “Shhh! Don’t jinx it.” DRH is not a teaching hospital, so that contributes a little to the quietness–you don’t have multiple providers poking on you.

Excellent patient care is an often-touted feature of Durham Regional, and I’ll have to agree. The facilities themselves don’t scream “money” as much as Duke’s. They’re older or perhaps not renovated as recently. The wireless works here, though.

But what’s most important is I brought my camera this time, so you get some food blogging today.

This is breakfast. I wish that had been grits in the bowl, but it was oatmeal. I like how the main plate is arranged into a Picasso-esque smile.

And, lunch. They have that cherry chocolate cake here, too. As I told the nutritionist, this cake is the bomb. I want the recipe.

Sorry, won’t get to post any dinner shots. And I’m happy to wind up this hospital tour!

  1. Food blogging at the VA would likely be the end of you. Rumor from my orientation session was:
In their infinite bureaucratic wisdom, they decided years ago that it would be cheaper to prepare the food in Salem, VA and truck the food on hot trucks all over than to have a big kitchen in each VA hospital.
It tastes as good as food that was prepared 100s of miles away and then shipped to you on heated trucks can taste.

  3. Yikes. Hopefully the cost of gas will outweigh this decision, and the veterans can have some chocolate cherry cake, too!

  5. (Also, good point: there is yet another hospital in town, the VA Hospital.)

  11. Glad to hear you’re doing ok!

About Durham Regional vs Duke Hospital, when my wife was pregnant she had an ovarian cyst that gave her some problems and once we went to Duke. It was absolutely horrible. They basically did nothing for her (she stayed all night with me in an uncomfortable chair near her) and when she went to leave the next day, they pretty much said “kthxbye” and left me to get her out the door. I really needed a wheelchair because she wasn’t really in shape for walking but instead she just leaned on me as much as she could and we made it to our car. It was the most horrible hospital experience we’ve ever had and as a result we avoid Duke hospital as much as possible.

Our experiences with Durham Regional, however, have been far and above much better. My son was born there and my wife had major surgery there and we’ve always been treated very well. Unless there’s something specific that people need at Duke, we always recommend Durham Regional over it.

  13. I am sorry to hear about that horrible experience at Duke. I hope you shared that information with them, too, and I hope they remembered it for the next person. Yes, I have been at births at both Duke and Durham Regional, and I would go for DRH given the choice. But I was happy with Duke’s emergency care.

  15. Thankfully, it’s been a while since I’ve been hospitalized. Is it just me, or do they really try to feed the heck out of you when you’re there??

Poor Vets. They spend half their lives eating MREs, then get stuck with 100+mile-old-food. :( I suspect the VA hospital food is better than the MREs.

  17. Mmm, MREs (okay, I did think it was a treat when I was 10).

The plates are large, but they feed you slightly after what I think is regular mealtime, like 9am and 1pm, so you are ready for it. I left out the snacks… they also drop off snacks of goldfish crackers, milk, fruit.

And I should add, the Roxboro Road Cook-Out is right around the corner from Durham Regional. ;)

  19. sorry to hear about the Lovelaces experience at Duke. I gave birth there and had a good experience. Surgery and all. They moved fast when needed. And did not forget the wheelchair to get me out of the hospital. I particularly liked the lactation nurse who was very patient and determined.
