That was a trick!
A lady drove her car off the edge of the Hardee’s parking lot into the gully facing Chapel Hill Boulevard today. I hope she’s okay! She did look fine, just shook up, and surrounded by people who had run up to help, and a Sheriff.
It also looked like there was a fire in the sewer near Forest Hills Park… is that even possible? I don’t know where hot water would come from in that location to make steam.
Oh, just a weird day.
Thank You
We are the Library Family for the boy’s classroom and the due date often slips notice until I get The Call. I received two calls this time, and the second one was quite stern. By the time I located all the books and got them back to the library (it was a sizable project-quarter’s worth), the bill was $64. I have learned not to flinch, and the librarians have truly been very kind in the past. Today I found out there’s a maximum late charge of $25, so I was in major luck. Durham County Public Librarians, how do we love you? Let me count the ways… (And I promise, really promise, to stop having overdue books.)
Donkey Ball
The donkey at NCMLS was carrying the handle ball around his pen on Saturday. He let someone throw it for him to fetch (indeed!) but would not let me pull it away to do it again. I got close enough to his big horse teeth to know to back off.
In cute news, the baby cow is very adorable. Giant brown eyes.
Black Friday
We did our part to bump the consumer economy into the black today. Drove the kids and my mom over to Guess Road to the Black Friday Yard Sale for a little reduce-reuse-recycle and then to Everything But Grannies Panties, also off Guess Road, for raw materials for making gifts–vintage glass jars for cocoa mixes and linen napkins for embellishing. Score of the day was a pillow set that, as predicted, coordinates that purple painting to our not-purple couches; 4 bucks, sweet!
Honey conquered a small bit of his Do list and reports that the auto parts store was having a huge sale and it was a madhouse. The idea of a bunch of men elbowing each other over tire rims tickles me. But the headlights were 25% off, and who can argue with that?
Pay Your Durham Water Bill Online
One less check to write: pay your durham water bill online at the new Durham website.
Waffling
Another thing I love about Durham is in addition to the internationally known institutions, local arts scene, foodie hangouts, regional mall, active neighborhoods, and progressive organizations, you don’t have to be all crunchy and high-minded. You can just go eat waffles. Here’s a review from first-time visitors.
The boy: The Waffle House has very big waffles, and they have syrup and butter. They have hot chocolate and coffee, too. They pour waffle mix into a waffle maker that cooks the waffle. You can get served right at your table if you’re right against the kitchen part. They have something near the window that plays music.
The girl: I liked drinking my hot cocoa. I drank it like spilling it. Watch me jump!
Lead Free Toys for Christmas
I found this notice at the Play House: “Our vendors know their suppliers, we know our vendors, you know us, why shop anywhere else?” If your house is not full of toys getting recalled for lead paint issues, this may be news, but parents are thinking about local lead-free toys for Christmas.
Durham Rocks
Need a smile? Wear a Durham Rocks t-shirt. Works every time.
I wonder if there are a lot of them for sale in the 305 South Anti-Mall inventory ebay sell-off.

Google Ron Paul
(No, that’s not a directive; We Love Durham is not going political.) This morning on the trip to Raleigh, we saw hand-stenciled signs with simply “Google Ron Paul.” They were at exit ramps, hanging off overpasses, and eye-catchingly planted beside a crash memorial cross. North Carolina is not a swing state; North Carolinians–despite Durham and Chapel Hill–are expected to vote in the party they always do, and so you don’t hear a lot of commercials or see a lot of yard signs and bumper stickers, even though we have a home-boy running for president. It’s nice to see someone cares! although I assume the signs are against ordinance and will be gone shortly.
It’s beginning to look…
…a lot like Christmas shopping. The mall was packed on Sunday, with both people and goods. If it is not a big spending season this year, there are going to be some great sales come January. Eh, my shopping is mostly done, I just needed a warm pair of pants. You know how you’re not supposed to grocery shop when you’re hungry? New rule: don’t shop for clothes when you’re chilly!
Urban Chickens
SEEDS has sponsored a petition to support households keeping “urban” chickens in residential areas. Right now you can’t in the RS zones in Durham, except for RS-20.
